Does Pequi Oil Peek Your Interest? Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment Review

I heard that the Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment was the new Moroccan Oil, so I wandered over to Sephora to check it out.

Pequi oil is made from the Amazonian Pequi fruit and this version contains mostly natural ingredients. I thought it was pricey at $32 for 2 oz, but I thought it would be worth it if its' claims were true:

- Dull, damaged hair is up to 600% stronger* after one application of Pequi Oil Treatment.
- Pequi Oil Treatment provides a 250% improvement in shine on dull, damaged hair.

Ladies and gents, STAY AWAY from this! I got a sample and used it today in place of my Moroccan Oil. I applied to it my damp hair prior to blow drying. What a mess my blow dry process was! My hair felt so dry and got tangled - and I never get tangles with Moroccan Oil. After the drying process, my hair looked and felt like straw. It was super dry and crispy, and wasn't at all soft or shiny. I ended up using some Moroccan Oil and Hana Shine Shield just to be able to tolerate my hair because I didn't have time to re-wash it. I followed the directions on the box and I didn't use any other new hair products, so this Pequi oil was definitely to blame.

January 2012 Favorites

Yes, I know I am not the first to say this, but can you believe January is already over? Where does the time go?

Anyhoo, here are the products I kept reaching for in January:

1. Laura Mercier Luster Eye Colour Duo in Dusk/Chocolate - These two shades work so well together making it easy to create a contoured eye. Both shadows are smooth, easy to blend, long lasting over primer, and very pigmented. I have really been loving Laura Mercier's color products lately and will be featuring more of my fave products in the coming weeks.

2. MAC Mineralize Blush in Early Morning - This is from the Naturally collection and although I normally don't go for mineralize blushes, this one is amazing. It is extremely pigmented so I use a light hand and a skunk brush (I prefer MAC's 188) so that I can have good control of how much color I apply. I think this is gorgeous on all skin tones, but due to pigmentation, it is best suited for medium-dark skin tones. All 3 blushes from the Naturally collection are super smooth, finely milled, and have a natural sheen to them that is not sparkly or matte. Ever since I got this one I have been using it almost everyday.

3. Hana Shine Shield Serum - I originally reviewed this here, and I liked it, but I have really been loving it the past few months. After washing my hair I apply a few drops of Moroccan Oil to damp hair, then blowdry and flatiron. Due to the winter static and dry weather, I have been having a lot of flyaways so after straightening my hair I rub a drop or two of this serum between my palms and smooth it over the top of my head. It works really well to control the flyaways, but it also adds softness and shine without adding any greasiness. Don't you love re-discovering good products you already have?

4. Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Corrupt - I confessed my love for this here and honestly, I haven't been using any other liners. This is darker than basic brown, but not as harsh as black, and it just works. I use it day and night and with all sorts of shadow combinations (or with no shadow). This pencil is just amazing and judging by how much I use and sharpen this, I better find another pencil just like it soon, cuz this is going to run out and it is not permanent....le sigh.

Aveda Brilliant Universal Styling Creme Review

I recently wandered in to the Aveda store because it was opposite my favorite clothing store, Express, and this product called out to me:

Aveda's Brilliant Universal Styling Creme is described as:

Rich creme formula defines texture and seals in moisture on medium to coarse hair. Apply to dry hair to create definition. Add brilliant shine with help from certified organic aloe and other plant humectants.

• Defines texture
• Seals in moisture
• Adds shine

Since my rebonded (chemically straightened) hair has grown out, I have been wearing my hair both curly/wavy and straight. Thus, I thought this product was going to be perfect for me since it works for both curly and straight hair that is dry (which mine is).

I used this for the first time last week. It was also the last. Brilliant is like using glue in your hair! It is a white creamy product that feels EXACTLY like the glue you used when you were a child. None of the reviews I read stated this. In any case, once it was in my hair, it did add some softness, but it didn't smooth my hair at all. Nothing I try can beat Moroccan Oil. I think I need to stop trying.

I am going to take this back, so do you have any good recommendations for Aveda products?

I am not going to do a monthly favorites post for October because there was really only one product I kept using, MAC's Face and Body Foundation, so I will do a separate review of that. But I did manage to finish 3 products last month:

1. Philosophy Purity Made Simple - My Holy Grail (HG) cleanser. This is the only cleanser that removes ALL traces of my face makeup, doesn't leave my skin feeling dry or like it has a film on it, and it just works. I professed my love for it here.



2. Phyto Phytodefrisant Botanical Hair Relaxing Balm - The last time I got my hair cut my stylist gave this to me to try out saying it is the best for calming frizzy hair. She is African American and swears by this product, and I thought if it works for her hair, it will definitely work for my hair! Wrong. My hair is really dry and this stripped all moisture from my hair, and it didn't add any softness. I didn't notice my hair being any straighter with this compared to my beloved Moroccan Oil, so back to the oil it is!

Taming My Hair....Karmin G3 Hair Straightener Review

If you have thick, long, frizzy, wavy or curly hair (or you just like smooth, straight hair), then you know that a hair straightener is as crucial a necessity as underwear. If I were to walk out in the streets without first straightening my hair I might as well be walking around commando. 

That being said, the straightener that I have been using for the past 6 months or so is the Karmin G3 Salon Pro Flat Iron. 

Prior to using this I was using my Sedu Pro Flat Iron.

Pros about the Karmin G3:

- Longer plates

- 1 inch plates allow you to get closer to the root of the hair

- Can be used to curl the hair

Pros about the Sedu:

- 1.5 inch plates allow contact with the hair for longer time

- Better construction...the plates are super smooth and don't snag the hair (the Karmin occasionally snags hair)

Both irons have ceramic plates with ionic tourmaline technology and both have adjustable heat settings. Both irons leave my hair super straight and results are very similar. With either iron my hair remains straight for at least 3 days before a wave starts to become visible. Overall, I really like both irons and use them equally without any issue. I do like that the Sedu doesn't snag my hair at all, but I like that the Karmin has longer plates so I can straighten larger sections of hair than I can with the Sedu. My ideal hair straightener would be a combination of the two. If you like to curl your hair, the Karmin works well to curl the ends, but is a bit difficult to curl all the hair. I think the Sedu Revolution Iron (different than what I have pictured above) works the best at curling hair. But honestly, if you are going to curl your hair just use a curling iron.

The Karmin is definitely one of the best flat irons I have ever used. However, I don't think is is significantly better than other professional flat irons like the Sedu. My Sedu iron was purchased from Folica.com, and they have GREAT customer service. I had even ordered one for my mom and when I got it in the mail, it wasn't working well and they shipped a new one to me without hassling me at all. I also like that they have great offers on a regular basis. The Karmin G3 was provided to me by PR, so I have not dealt with their customer service.

April Favorites

I didn't discover anything new and lovely during April, so my favorites are all oldies but goodies, with the exception of one hair product.

1. Lush Sweet Lips Lip Scrub - This delicious chocolatey-vanilla lip scrub is sooooo tasty it makes me want to lick it off instead of scrub it in! It is a relatively simple sugar scrub that I could probably mix together in my kitchen, but I rarely have time for that, especially if I am trying to smoothen my lips before wearing lipstick for an evening out. I have been using this all winter and have barely made a dent in the pot, so I love that it not only leaves my lips soft and smooth, but it will last forever. 

2. MAC Paint Pot in Rubenesque - This was the first shade of Paint Pot that I ever got and years later, it is still my favorite. The peachiness is subtle enough that I can use it as a base for any eye color, but it is interesting enough that I can wear it by itself with a swipe of mascara and be good to go. 

3. MAC Lustreglass in Love Nectar - My absolute FAVORITE gloss!! It is a subtle peach color with flecks of gold shimmer, and it looks good on top of ANY lipstick. I've gone through several tubes of this because when in doubt, I always reach for this gloss. 

4. MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator - Originally released with the MAC Style Black collection in the Fall of 2009, this facial scrub was a big seller and I know why. It works!!! This exfoliator removes dead skin cells, helps clarify the skin, makes the skin softer and smoother, and is gentle enough that it can be used everyday....and for awhile I actually did use it everyday! Until I realized I used all my backup tubes and opened my last one. I am crossing my fingers that MAC releases this product again this year or makes it permanent. It's just that awesome. 

5. HANAair Professional Hair Dryer. I haven't touched my drugstore hair dryer since I got this pro gadget. It dries my hair super fast, helps to eliminate frizz, and I feel like it doesn't burn my hair like most drugstore hair dryers do....it's definitely worth the price! My full review is here.

Island Paradise in a Bottle

Picture yourself in the tropics.....on a private island....in a private paradise bungalow.....surrounded by tropical plants and flowers......having a relaxing shower in an outdoor bathroom that overlooks the ocean....massaging your scalp with the most indulgent of shampoos......imagine the fragrance surrounding you.....

...I've found that fragrance in a shampoo bottle. 

I recently tried the Paul Mitchell Original Shampoo One. Now, I may not be able to make the dream a reality for you, but I have found the shampoo that will make you feel like a Necker Island dream is reality....at least for the 10 minutes you are in the shower. Necker Island btw is Richard Branson's private island paradise where celebs go to escape the daily grind.

This shampoo is a basic clarifying shampoo that I have been using once every few weeks to get a break from my regular moisturizing and smoothing shampoo. It's not moisturizing enough for me for daily use because my hair is so thick and dry, but for those with fine or thin hair, this would be a great daily shampoo. In any case, the tropical fragrance of this shampoo is enough to make me run to the salon and sniff every Paul Mitchell bottle to find a smoothing shampoo that will make me feel like I am bathing on an island paradise. 

Speaking of fragrances, when I was at the Macy's Trend Show last week, I was handed a fragrance card with some new fragrance on it. I had the card sitting in a bag in my bedroom and every time I walked by that bag, I could smell the amazing scent of fragrant tiare flowers (my fave) combined with a sweet floral musk. I finally pulled the card out of the bag a couple days ago and discovered the next fragrance on my must-buy list:

I have and love the original Ralph Lauren Romance, but this one takes it to another level. If you like the original, you MUST try this one....now I just hope it's not limited edition.

Makeup Tip Monday: Adding Life Back To Your Hair

Do you fall in love with a particular shampoo/conditioner and then keep using that over and over and over? Well, this isn't always good for your hair. It's like working out....if you stick to the same exercise routine for a long time, your body gets used to the exercise and will plateau and you will stop seeing results. The same is true for your hair and hair products. So what do you do?

Switch up your shampoo and conditioner every few weeks to keep your hair looking fresh, voluminous, and to allow the ingredients in the products to actually work. Here's a couple ways to do so:

1. Keep two sets of shampoo and conditioner that you like, and alternate using them every month. 
2. If you prefer only using the shampoo and conditioner you usually use, every 3-4 weeks or so wash your hair once with a different shampoo and conditioner, then go back to using your normal products. This is a great way to use up that mediocre shampoo/conditioner you have sitting in your bathroom, or try out that sample thats been sitting around.

Is a $200 Hair Dryer Really Better Than A $20 Hair Dryer?

I have always wondered whether or not investing in a quality hair dryer is really worth it. I recently got my answer when trying out the HANAair Professional Hair Dryer:

This hair dryer, priced at $194.99 on Misikko.com is inspired by Italian design and claims to dry your hair up to 60% faster while maintaining natural shine while promoting healthy luxurious hair.

I recently compared this hair dryer to my basic $20 Conair hair dryer to see if the pricier version is worth the extra money. 

In terms of the dryer itself, they are both around the same size, the Hana has a longer cord which is great but it is slightly heavier than the Conair. Both have cold air capabilities, and they both have multiple heat and power settings:

One of the cool things about the Hana is that the cold air function is a button that you press once, you don't have to keep holding it down to get cold hair, which makes it easier to hold the dryer. With my Conair, the cold air button has to be held down. In terms of use, the Conair heats up right away. The Hana takes about 15 seconds to reach the appropriate heat setting, which is kind of annoying. That being said, the Hana doesn't get super hot, but still delivers the results! I really like this because the technology of the Hana allows it to dry your hair without burning your hair! Sometimes with my Conair my hair feels so hot that I think it is dry, but once I let the hair cool down, I realize it is still damp and I have to re-dry that section of hair. I don't have this issue with the Hana. 

Now for the real results. I have used both dryers without the concentrator attachment to do a quick-and-dirty dry, and I have used both with the attachment to get a smooth, straight look. Both hair dryers give me a similar look, but the experience is totally different. Here, I dried my hair the quick-and-dirty way:

Visibly, you can't tell I used different hair dryers. But when I tried my hair with the Hana, my hair dried completely in half the time it took with the Conair! When I dry my hair straight with the attachment, it takes about 30 minutes with the Conair, and with the Hana it only takes me 15 minutes!! This might not be 60% faster like the company claims, but 50% faster is worth cheering for in my book!

Also, the hair dried with the Hana felt much smoother. Even my hubby noticed (and he doesn't notice much when it comes to hair). 

So to answer my question of whether the $200 hair dryer is better than the $20 hair dryer, my answer is a big, fat YES! Any product that helps me get ready faster in the morning is worth it, especially when you consider how long a product like a hair dryer will last. For me, it saves 15 minutes each time I dry my hair. Consider that times the number of times I dry my hair in a year, and if the drier last several years, thats like days of time that I am saving by using the pricier hair drier! For me, the Hana definitely is the Best Hair Dryer! 

Can You Believe I Did This?

I recently curled my hair. Rather, I had my hair curled. It was curled using a straightening iron. It was the first time this person used a straightening iron to curl hair. 

Didn't that turn out well? I am still amazed. This look was achieved thanks to the Sedu Revolution 1" straightening iron. =)

Smooth Hair and Giveaway Time!

The kind folks at Misikko sent me the Hana Shine Shield Thermal Protectant to try out, and now that I have had a chance to use it a few times, I am excited to tell you all how great this product is! Now Misikko isn't paying me to write anything in this post (see Disclaimer), it is all my personal opinion and experience, but I do want to say that one thing I love about Misikko is that they always seem to have great deals and coupons that they email to you if you sign up for their newsletter. As you may know, I had my hair rebonded (Japanese hair straightening) in January when I was in India. 10 months later, my hair has grown significantly and I have about 5 inches of hair at my roots that is wavy and super frizzy. This product couldn't have come at a better time because I have been in desperate need of something to tame the frizzies and protect my hair from the hair dryer and straightening iron.

I use a nickel sized amount of the clear, liquidy serum and apply to my roots and all throughout my hair...all the way to the ends. I then blow-dry as usual, and if I have time, flat iron my roots. What I like about this product is that although it contains jojoba oil, it is non-greasy...so even the day after, my hair is not oily and gross. This really adds a lot of shine to my hair and makes it feel so nice and soft. And best of all, it does help tame the frizzies. If you have super curly or kinky hair, this might not be strong enough for your frizzies, but if you have thick, wavy hair like me, the Hana Shine Shield will work pretty well to tame those bad boys.

This also works as a good leave-in conditioner. If you have thinner hair and don't have much frizz to worry about, a few drops of this should help keep your hair soft and shiny. If any of you have tried the Chi Silk Infusion, this works waaaay better and is not greasy like the Chi product.

Does Living Proof No Frizz Leave-In Conditioner Really Eliminate Frizz?

A few months ago when I started seeing the No Frizz products hit the shelves of Sephora....I was intrigued. Could there really be a product out there that eliminates Frizz? My skepticism got the best of me, as I have been failed numerous times by John Frieda's Frizz Ease and other frizz-fighters on the market. Alas I received an opportunity to try out the new brand's leave-in-conditioner:

The No Frizz line is based on the patent-pending PolyfluoroEster, discovered by top MIT scientists to create a weightless shielf on the hair to prevent moisture flux in and out, and coat the cuticles to reduce the friction between fibers. This innovation in frizz-fighting is the first of its kind. With its snazzy flip top cap and this miracle scientific ingredient, I had high hopes that my wavy, fro-like, frizzy hair had finally found its match.

Smooth Control Hair Shampoo

I started trying out the Schwarzkopf Professional hair care products after my aunt in India recommended them to me, and her stylist in Mumbai recommended them to her. I have actually had my hair done from this stylist and she is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G so I trust her recommendations. Anyways, for awhile now I have been using the Schwarzkopf Professional BC Bonacure Smooth Control Shampoo and Conditioner. This is the best shampoo and conditioner I have ever used. I have used both drugstore and professional salon products and these products have given me the smoothest, silkiest hair and beat out anything I have ever used. Even my mom loves these! The shampoo does a great job of cleansing away all the serum, heat protectant, and other product I use in my hair, and it really does feel squeeky clean. Yes, even after putting the age old remedy of coconut oil in my hair (though, whenever I use coconut oil, I ALWAYS shampoo twice just to make sure I get the greasiness out). The conditioner says to leave it in for 3 minutes, so I usually condition, then wash my face, and sing a lil, then rinse it out. It leaves my hair soft, silky, manageable, and makes me want to wave my hair around like the girls in the Pantene commercials. Both products are nice, softly scented, and not at all overpowering. You just get clean, soft, manageable hair. This is especially great if you straighten your hair, or have straight hair and just want it to be less frizzy.

I think Schwarzkopf Professional products are more readily available in Europe than in the US, as I have not seen them in too many salons, but I know they are there. In the US, Ulta is your best bet.

I have since purchased a Schwarzkopf Professional deep conditioning treatment and am almost more in love with that, so will write a post about that too!

Straight Hair? Curly Hair?

I have been blessed (cursed?) with the typical desi, thick, wavy hair. Not curly enough and not straight enough to be worn naturally. Thus I succcumb to the hair industry as I am always in need of hair products and good hair irons. A few months ago my flat iron conked out on me. I had heard amazing things about the Sedu flat iron so decided to give it a try. I have the Sedu Pro Ionic Ceramic Tourmaline Flat Iron (1.5"). Ladies, this baby works wonders. It leaves my hair soft, shiny, stick straight, and it takes only 15 minutes to do all my hair! My Sedu is by far the best straightener I have ever used, and I have used a lot of them. I have even had the Japanese hair staightening treatment known as rebonding. More on that in a later post.

I did a lot of research, as I most often do, and the Sedu is available only at Folica.com. Right now they are having a great sale and I recommend checking out some of their products. The flat iron model I have is not on sale (it's $120, and they often have $20 off coupons and free shipping over $50, so you can get it for $100), but they do have a great Sedu set called the Sedu Pink Revolution Sleek and Straight Set. This includes a pink Sedu Revolution Pro Nano Ceramic Tourmaline 1 Inch Iron, a Sedu Professional Straightening Accessory Comb, a Folica Pop-Up Brush and Travel Bag, and a Vera Bradley Signature Bag (a $294.98 value) all for only $99.99. The only thing I would be iffy about is that the iron is pink, but if you love pink like I do, then it's an even better deal!

The Sedu Revolution iron is supposed to be great because it has a rounded edge so you can use it to create curls and waves. It might even be more amazing than the iron I have because you can straighten and curl with just one tool! I haven't tried this one but I have friends who use it and they love it so I'm sure it is fabulous.

Since I have a great iron already I am considering getting the Sedu hair dryer that is on sale. I know it's pricey, but my flat iron was just as expensive and it just might have been the best $100 I spent this year.

CHI Hair Product Set

I am a HUGE fan of warehouse clubs like Costco and Sams. Yes, even when I lived alone I used to shop there. Why? Because there is always stuff I need that is cheaper to buy at these clubs (gas, toilet paper, etc) and you can always score some major deals. Like today, when I went to Sams Club and while I was perusing the beauty and health aisles, I found the CHI Hair Care Set below:

This set was $22 and includes:

*12oz CHI Silk Infusion (normally $28 on its own) - This is a leave in treatment like Biosilk, that helps strengthen your hair, providing incredible softness, manageability and shine without any build-up. Alcohol free, enriched with pure silk and wheat and soy proteins.

The Silk Infusion is supposed to be amazing and I have been meaning to try it out, so I couldn't pass on this amazing deal. I am currently using the CHI Keratin Mist and CHI 44 Iron Guard heat protectant and I am loving both, so I figure these will be good too. In any case, whether you already use any of these and plan to buy more, or have been wanting to try any of these products on their own, I HIGHLY recommend getting this set.
